Because food safety is of paramount importance, supermarkets want assurances from their suppliers that they have done everything in their power to prevent food safety issues and complaints. BRCGS Food is a certification standard that was developed in the UK and meets the requirements of the British Retailers Consortium (BRC). Production companies need the BRCGS Food certificate if they want to deliver to these supermarkets.

The BRCGS Food check is performed by MPS-ECAS, among others. MPS-ECAS writes a BRCGS Food audit report based on this inspection, which the supplier sends to the retailer for assessment to indicate that the supplier meets the set requirements.
